The Suffolk Literacy Council needs volunteers to tutor adults in basic reading skills.

The next workshop is Oct. 3 and 4 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. each evening.

The workshops are held at Suffolk Christian Church at 216 North Main Street.

Turkey-Ham Shoots

Bennetts Creek Ruritan will be holding Turkey-Ham Shoots every Saturday evening from Oct. 1 through Nov. 26.

The shoots will be at a new location, 5433 Shoulders Hill Road.

The benefits help the Driver Volunteer Fire Department, Boy Scout Troop 16 and the North Suffolk YMCA.

Tickets go on sale each Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and the shoot starts at 6:00 p.m.

Fall Festival

Autumn Care of Suffolk will be having its annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The festival will include a car show, blood pressure screenings, raffles, arts and crafts, baked goods, collectibles, face painting, and much more.

All proceeds will go to residents funding.

Whaleyville V. F. D. fish fry

The Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a fish fry Saturday, Oct. 1 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Cost is $6 per plate; eat in or take out.

Trout fillet, cole slaw, boiled potatoes and hush puppies will be served, along with a bake sale from the Women of Whaleyville United Methodist Church.

Tickets will be sold at the door, or see any V. F. D. member.

State Fair bus trip

St. Timothy Baptist Church is sponsoring a bus to the State Fair on Saturday, Oct. 1.

The bus will leave the church at 7:00 a.m. and leave from the fair at 6:00 p.m.

The Suffolk Pentecostal Holiness Church, 100 Kilby Shores Drive, is hosting a city wide &uot;All you can Eat Pig Pickin’&uot; on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 5-12 and free for children under five.
