Lakeland High alumni Katelyn Smither was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week after banging in the first hat trick of her college career in Old Dominion University’s 7-0 win over Drexel and scoring one in the Lady Monarchs’ win over Richmond.

Smither’s six goals thus far this season rank her seventh in the conference and fourth on the Lady Monarch squad, which will host James Madison Friday. ODU is currently ranked sixth in the Stix/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll.

In other action, Cara Byrd, Smither’s teammate on the 2001-02 Southeastern District-winning Lady Cavalier squad, pushed in a pair of goals in Virginia Wesleyan College’s 7-1 defeat of Randolph-Macon Saturday to get her career total to 34, seven below Monica Saltarelli’s school record.

Byrd’s goals and an assist in the Lady Marlins’ 3-1 loss Frostburg State upped her point career point total to 96, adding to the record she set last week.

She’ll get her next chances to get closer to the goal record at home this weekend, as the Lady Marlins battle Washington and Lee University and Shenandoah University.
