Boy, 12, shot in stomach

A 12-year-old boy who was shot in the stomach late Friday is in stable condition this morning in Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters.

Police were called out to Heritage Acres Apartment, in the 1000 block of Nansemond Parkway, around 11 p.m. discovered the child suffering from gunshot wounds, said Lt. Debbie George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department. The youngster was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital’s emergency room.

Police have charged the youngster’s cousin, Travis Woodson, 21, of the 2300 block of Elwood Drive in Franklin, with the shooting, George said. Witnesses told authorities that Woodson fled the residence with a handgun Friday night before police arrived.

Woodson is charged with one count of malicious wounding and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

He is being held in Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
