Nansemond River and King’s Fork notched victories in field hockey Wednesday, as the Lady Warriors charged past visiting Hickory 5-0 and the Lady Bulldogs got by host Oscar Smith 4-1 for their first Southeastern District victory of the season. Fork’s Brandi Novak had three assists and River’s Katelyn Yandle got two and a goal.

Amy Shinault hit an assist to Ashley Aston for River’s first goal three minutes in, and both teams missed several scoring chances over the next few minutes. With just over nine minutes to play, the Lady Warriors got a corner stroke. Tina Valdevieso hit it to Yandle, who passed to Aston for the goal.

Three minutes later, Yandle got a pass in the middle and charged into the Hickory circle. She sent the ball to Aston near the left goalpost, and Aston whacked a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper’s stick and went high into the goal.

With momentum squarely on the side of the Lady Warriors, Jessica Watahovich stole the ball from a defender on the left side with just under two minutes left and sent it to Yandle in the center. Yandle barreled into the circle and collided with a defender. Her opponent fell, and Yandle reared back to hammer a shot into the back of the Hickory goal.

Anna Key got the Lady Warriors’ final goal on an assist from Lindsey Wyatt with just over eight minutes to go in the game.

While Lakeland gets a turn with Hickory at home today for a makeup game, River will go to Western Branch Wednesday.

Over at Smith, Whitney Witt, Kelsey Ewell, Amber Parker and Courtney Spaulding scored for the Lady Bulldogs, and Witt had an assist.

Fork will host Indian River next Wednesday.
