Chaining dogs, Oct. 11, 2005

So, according to our latest Web poll, 70 percent of Suffolkians want to keep their pit bulls and keep them chained up in the yard.

What’s wrong with you people?

Admittedly, I’m a bit of a dog lover, but I’d no more keep an animal chained all day in the yard than I would an Iraqi detainee. It’s like the staff at Abu Grahib all went on line and voted.

Do you also take photos of yourselves smiling and pointing at your dog’s genitalia?

One hundred and sixty-five Suffolkians voted to retain the right to torture their pets. And that’s what chaining is.

I often take Godwin Boulevard to and from work and it breaks my heart to see this one dog chained to his master’s carport every time I go by, morning, evening, middle of the day. Half the time I’m tempted to go turn him loose but am afraid of getting bit. Dogs kept chained often become aggressive.

Anyway, I’m disappointed in that poll result. You’d think we live in North Carolina, for crying out loud.

Please people, if you have to keep a dog chained all day, do it a favor and put it to sleep.
