They won’t get a paycheck. But they will work hard anyway.

And volunteers serving on the American Red Cross disaster relief teams will have an exciting, rewarding experience, said Fay Byrum, executive director of the agency’s Suffolk chapter.

The agency is hoping to attract new volunteers to help victims of local disasters by serving on the Disaster Action Team and the Disaster Services Human Resource System, which focuses on large-scale disasters.

Volunteers are needed in all areas of specialization: disaster assessment, family services, mass care, logistics, DAT members, public affairs, computer data entry or fundraising, she said.

Members of both teams will help families who have lost their homes and belongings in a disaster, Byrum said.

&uot;Red Cross disaster volunteers are among the first people to respond to a disaster,&uot; she said. &uot;In the local area, the most common type of disaster is the residential fire.

&uot;Volunteers can help families through a devastating time by ensuring the family has food, clothing, and a place to sleep.&uot;

The agency will be offering a disaster weekend training seminar Nov. 19-20. With the variety of classes offered, volunteers will be able to complete their training in a single weekend.

All courses will be taught at the Suffolk office at 109 1/2 Clay Street. Pre-registration is required.
