A grand jury on Wednesday indicted a Suffolk man accused to keeping money raised during a softball tournament fundraiser with two counts of felony embezzlement.

Michael J. Curbelo, 38, of the 200 block of Fallawater Way, is accused of keeping approximately $1,500 raised during the fundraiser for the family of the late Suffolk Police Officer William A. &uot;Drew&uot; Henley. The benefit was held in April, about three weeks after Henley, 33, died of natural causes after apprehending a suspect.

Curbelo, a former advertising representative with the Suffolk News-Herald, turned himself into police in August. His case is slated to be heard in Suffolk Circuit Court on Dec. 29.

Curbelo is accused of making at least two withdrawals for approximately $750 each and using the money for personal use, said Lt. Debbie George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department. Henley’s widow Chrissy approached police after only receiving only $1,000 of the estimated $2,500 reportedly raised during the tournament.
