The Suffolk woman who neglected to seek medical treatment for her 1-year-old son’s burns in June could receive up to 12 months in jail.

Jennifer Renea King, 29, of Stacey Drive, pleaded guilty Monday in Suffolk Circuit Court to one count of felony child abuse/neglect. As part of her plea agreement, prosecutors dropped a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

She will be sentenced Jan. 11.

King was arrested June 24, several days after the toddler’s father noticed multiple burns on the child’s buttocks after picking him up for a weekend custody visit, said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Marie Walls. The father took the child to Obici Hospital, where physicians determined that the second-degree burns were &uot;non-accidental,&uot; she said.

Last week, a grand jury indicted King’s boyfriend, Reshawn Lamont Phillips, 28, of Suffolk, with malicious wounding and child neglect/abuse-serious injury for deliberately burning the child with a hot frying pan.

Phillips, who is being held on unrelated charges in Portsmouth City Jail, has been served with the indictments, said Lt. Debbie J. George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department.

As a condition of her plea agreement, King will assist authorities in convicting Phillips.
