The Suffolk Shelter for the Homeless will be receiving funds withheld by the city and state for the past five months in coming weeks.

The city will be handing over approximately $17,000 during a special meeting Nov. 9, said Allen Brown, newly elected chairman of the shelter’s board of directors.

Another $33,000 earmarked in the city’s current budget is also in the pipeline, he said.

&uot;We have come to terms,&uot; said Brown late Monday, minutes after board members wrapped up a meeting with City Manager R. Steven Herbert.

Efforts to reach the city for comment were unsuccessful.

That news comes on top of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s decision to begin releasing approximately $72,000.

The agency will cut a check as soon as officials have a chance to meet with the shelter’s new executive director, Alecia Gregg, and board members, said Willie Fobbs, the DHCD’s associate director of housing.

Officials from the department will be coming to Suffolk within the next couple of weeks.

&uot;The resume and credentials we have received appear to be strong,&uot; he said. &uot;We are ready to release funding as soon as we meet with the board and make sure everyone is up to speed on things.

&uot;We are excited,&uot; he said. &uot;The board appears to be moving in the right direction.&uot;

Both the city and state put holds on funding in May, after the shelter’s former executive director Terry Miller abruptly quit and the Virginia State Police launched a criminal investigation into alleged embezzlement and mismanagement of money.
