For the community

Short on members, long on giving, and high on Serving the Children of the World.
I have just described the Kiwanis Club of Suffolk.
Through the efforts of the club and the public’s participation in our yard sales, peanut sales and donations six local young adults have garnered, six scholarships of $500 were given this past year.
Fifty children were able to go to YMCA summer camp and an unknown number of Suffolk’s children were seen and attended to by the Children’s Kiwanis Emergency Center at CHKD in Norfolk.
The small group of men and women that meet every Monday night at Fire Mountain Family Steakhouse are dedicated to service; to the community, to the two Key Clubs (high school Kiwanians) they sponsor, to the victims of Katrina and the tsunami devastation, to Head Start, Salvation Army, YMCA, Children’s Center, King’s Kids, etc.
The old statement, “numbers make the difference,” means if the club had more members, they could do more.
Members get satisfaction out of giving back; 250 service hours to the community, 42 service hours to youth, and that was for one of our slow months, September.
On Oct. 22, the club had a yard sale of donated, gently-used articles from the community, thanks to you donors.
Better yet, the club would like to thank all the shoppers that were able to find something nice and usable at a bargain price.
The money raised will be put to good use, such as for gifts at the Christmas/Santa party for the Salvation Army kids.
Please look forward to the club’s annual peanut sales; three different cans of Planters peanut products, boxed, at a very reasonable price.
Yours in service,
H. J. Miller,
19-year Kiwanian
