Woods, other Warriors wrestlers ready

After Vernell Woods’ first season of wrestling at Nansemond River, there was only one question on everyone’s mind – what’s his sophomore year going to be like?

&uot;I went to regionals last year,&uot; Woods said as 2005-06 practice started earlier in the week, &uot;but I’m not going to be satisfied until I get past that and place in states. I’m going to go for it all.&uot;

Wrestling at the end of the year with a broken collarbone, Woods became the second freshman in River history to make it to the next level last season, and placed in the top 16 in 103 competition at the Super 32 event in Greensboro over the summer. The Warriors start their season Dec. 3 at a Cape Henry tournament.

&uot;There’s a lot of new kids,&uot; Woods said, looking over the River mats, &uot;but they’re working.&uot;

Indeed, River’s got a large team this season, but in number – over 20 kids right now – not in experience, as Shawn Carr said.

&uot;We’ve got a lot of freshman and other first-year wrestlers,&uot; Carr said. &uot;But right now we’re looking like we have a full squad. That’s what killed me last year – no lower weights. Hopefully, no forfeits this year. I’m making sure my veterans go out and help the new kids.&uot;

One &uot;new&uot; kid is senior Brian Pasani.

&uot;I came to conditioning a few times, and it was more fun than I thought,&uot; said Pasani, who hopes to stay in shape for football when his college career starts next season. &uot;It’s more fun than work. I have to cut 10 pounds to get down to make weight at 275.&uot;
