A propane truck driver involved in an accident in north Suffolk on Monday is facing charges in the incident.

John F. Carter, of the 200 block of Byrd Street, has been charged with reckless driver-failure to maintain proper control, said Lt. Debbie J. George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department. Carter is a driver for A&B Propane, located in the 1700 block of South Military Highway, Chesapeake.

Carter was driving the truck on Bennetts Pasture Road, between Driver Lane and St. Andrews Drive, around 11:30 a.m. Monday when he lost control and overturned in a ditch, said George. There were no injuries.

The truck, loaded with 2,500 gallons of liquid propane, developed a leak, prompting the evacuation of the Warrington subdivision and closure of Bennetts Pasture Road for more than eight hours, George said.

Suffolk firefighters, rescue workers and police had the leak contained by 5:30 p.m. after workers were able to thaw a frozen valve, George said.

Other agencies that responded to the accident scene included the Southside Regional Hazardous Materials Team, the Virginia Department of Transportation, Department of Emergency Management and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
