After the first day of the Canned Food basketball tournament Monday evening at Booker T. Washington Recreation Center, the score could be considered 3-1.

That is, three games were decided by large margins. One came down to the wire.

In the first game of youth competition, the Boys and Girls Club of Franklin squeaked past the Wolverines 41-37. It appeared that the first adult game would be tight as well, as neither Oak Grove nor Against the Grain pulled ahead by more than three points for the entire first half, which ended with Grove up, 29-28.

But then the second half began, and Grove took over, roaring to a 26-7 advantage to a 56-35 victory. Frelanda Lee scored nine points in the jump, and Maurice Whitehead pushed in eight to up his game-leading total to 18.

The Sports Shop had an even easier time of things, as its opponents didn’t show up, giving Shop a forfeit win into the finals, which were late Wednesday.

The Cavaliers charged out to an 11-1 lead in the second youth game and never looked back on their way to a 46-33 defeat of the Clippers. Chris Hunter led the Cavs with 16 points.
