Everyone likes to help a good cause; but when one can do that and have a great time in the process, it’s so much the better.

For five years now, Roy Black, owner of Interstate Auction in Suffolk, has hosted a holiday party to thank his business associates and friends. Black foots the bill for everything n the food, refreshments, facilities and entertainment. All he asks guests to do is bring a toy for the price of admission.

Through the years, Black’s holiday parties have been held in various Hampton Roads cities. While he has always collected lots of toys for charity, it’s always been a bit of a chore to find a charity to take them off his hands.

This year, Black’s party landed in Suffolk, and several months ago he contacted Sheriff Raleigh Isaacs about the toys.

“I knew just where to send him,” Isaacs said. “I told him Suffolk Toys for Tots would be thrilled to have them.”

The party was held Saturday night at the Suffolk Armory, and on Tuesday, Black, joined by Isaacs and Suffolk’s other constitutional officers n Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Philips Ferguson, Circuit Clerk Randy Carter, Commissioner of the Revenue Thomas Hazelwood and Treasurer Ron Williams n presented the more than 400 toys to Toys for Tots.

As an additional bonus, Black and his business associated raised $525 through a 50-50 raffle at the event and that money was turned over to the News-Herald’s Cheer Fund.

“I live in Suffolk, my business is in Suffolk and many of the people I do business with are in Suffolk, so I’m glad to see the toys and money benefit people here,” Black said. “I’ll be having my party in Suffolk from now on.”
