W. Millard Stevens

The Rev. Dr. W. Millard Stevens, Pastor Emeritus of the First Christian United Church of Christ, passed away at the age of 94.

Dr. Stevens was a native of Randolph County, Ala., and a graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke, Ala. He was the son of the late W.H. Stevens and the late Nora Payne Stevens. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Alda June Jones Stevens and infant son, Thomas Wyatt Stevens. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Kenice Stevens, Curtis Stevens and Joe Tom Stevens, and one sister, Annie Rae Stevens.

Dr. Stevens is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kathleen Miles Stevens of the home, and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Stevens graduated from Elon College and Yale University Divinity School. He was given an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Elon College in 1952. He was ordained as a Christian Minister in the Congregational Christian Church, later the United Church of Christ. He served as a pastor in Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut and Tennessee.

Dr. Stevens served two terms as President of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ, formerly the Southern Convention of the Congregational Christian Churches from 1950-1954. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Elon College for 41 years. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Bradley Memorial Hospital while a pastor in Southington, Connecticut. At the time of his death, he was Pastor Emeritus of the First Christian United Church of Christ and Trustee Emeritus of Elon University.
