Chamber forum in Richmond draws 12 locals

A group of 12 representatives from the Suffolk-Nansemond Chamber of Commerce will be in Richmond to attend a one day leadership forum at the John Marshall Hotel.

The forum is sponsored by the U. S. Chamber of Commerce, Walter F. Carey, president, who will head a team of economists, business leaders and legislative and political specialists who will conduct the forum.

Heading the Suffolk delegation will be Chamber president Norman H. Marlin Jr.. Others scheduled to attend are Forrest H. Womack, the Chamber’s executive director, W. Randolph Black, Robert W, Froemel, Frank A. Spady Jr., James B. Boone Jr., Jack W. Webb, James F. Hope, William H. Reid, M. E. Bowman, James E. Parker and Jack McN Baird.

Hamblin’s photo studio to be razed

First Federal Savings and Loan Co. officials said today that future plans for property owned by the company on N. Main Street will be announced within the next month.

J. R. Dixon, assistant manager of First Federal, said today that demolition of the old Hamblin’s Studio on N. Main St. is well underway this week. First Federal purchased the property about a year ago. Hamblin’s is now located in a new office building on Market Street.

Little Theater to perform here

Jeanette Chapman of Smithfield has been selected to play the leading woman’s role in the play, Love is Contagious, Friday and Saturday night in the Suffolk High School auditorium, and March 12 and 13 in the Smithfield High School auditorium.

The play will be presented by the Smithfield Little Theater and is sponsored by the Suffolk Junior Volunteer Service Corps. Tickets can be purchased from Mrs. James Gabbert, chairman of ticket sales, or any member of the corps.

PTA ladies play Whaleyville

Whaleyville and Cypress PTA ladies will join forces Thursday in a basketball game against the Whaleyville High girls at 7:30. Donations received from spectators will be given to the Suffolk-Nansemond Rescue Squad.

Composing the PTA squad are Marie Jones, Herberteen Riddick, Frances Carroll, Sarah Claud, Mildred Small, Minnie Winslow, Ann Boyette, Judy Bailey, Jean O’Berry, Jackie Tomlin, Peggy Horton, Marie Pierce, and Margaret Franklin.

Girl Scouts end camera badge work

Twenty four Junior Girl Scouts completed their camera-badge requirements with the help of the Suffolk Police Department and Desk Sgt. R. V. Bryant, in charge of all the department’s photography.

The girls have been coming to police headquarters for three Saturdays for two-hour sessions on the merit badge work. They learned how the camera works, how to use the flash attachment, lighting and composition, and how to make prints and enlargements.

Leaders of the two troops taking part were from troop 748, Mrs. Jack W. Webb, and from troop 783, Mrs. E. T. Lemmon.

Bears number one seeds

On Wednesday at 5:30 the Group Two District 9 Tournament goes into its first round as eight of the nine conference teams meet at the Hayden High School in Franklin to decide a representative from the district for the State tournament at Hampton.

Booker T. Washington of Suffolk has both the top seeded boys’ and girls’ teams as each completed their seasons undefeated.

Central wins midget title

Central’s midget basketball team won games two days in a row to claim the league championship. On Friday the Central boys defeated the Comets 43-8, then came back Saturday to win 17-12 over Riverview-Kingsboro.

In other games, Joyner whipped Hall Place 21-3 and Lakeside defeated the Comets 19-14.

Central: Glenn Hughes 14, Steve Hughes 2, Ronnie Parker 3, Stan Pope and Pete Messina 8, David Walker and Jeff Holland 4.

Parker speaks to Ruritans

Robert Parker Jr. reported on the recent Ruritan National Convention held at New Orleans, La., at a meeting of the Liberty Spring Community Ruritan Club.

The president, J. D. Williams presided at the meeting and announced that the club will sponsor a pancake supper at the Liberty Spring Christian Church.
