A Suffolk man who allegedly stole and wrecked a pickup truck Sunday morning is in critical condition in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Micheaux Linton, 23, of the 200 block of Grace Street, was airlifted to the Norfolk hospital around 11 a.m. after the accident on U.S. Route 58 East, said Lt. Debbie J. George, spokeswoman for the Suffolk Police Department.

Linton apparently lost control of the truck, which skidded through a guardrail and struck a tree, George said. Rescuers had to extricate him from the vehicle.

Police got a report that someone had stolen a 2000 Chevrolet pickup from outside the Southern Food Store, in the 600 block of East Washington Street, around 9:30 a.m., George said. About 15 minutes later, authorities were called to the accident scene near the regional landfill’s entrance.

Warrants have been filed charging Linton with grand larceny, reckless driving, driving with a suspended operator’s license and driving without a seat belt, George said.
