Roasting oysters

I’m almost embarrassed to say that I’ve been in Suffolk six years and yesterday I attended by first Chuckatuck Ruritan Oyster Roast.

What a wonderful event.

Robert Pocklington, News-Herald columnist and a member of the club, told me 1,050 tickets were sold for the event and nearly 1,000 came through the gates. At $25 a ticket, that’s more than $26,000 gross for the club’s coffers, all of which, after expenses, goes back into the community via the Ruritans’ various causes, which include Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorers, the Lifeline bracelets and many more.

While only about a fifth the size of the Suffolk Ruritan Shrimp Feast n a wonderful event in itself n I think I prefer the Oyster Roast. Tucked away off Everetts Road with no fences and no bands, it’s a much more intimate affair, allowing attendees to focus all their attention on the oysters, beer and socializing.

Perhaps it’s just that I’m getting older. I’m sure 10 or 20 years ago I would have found it boring, but now, it’s pleasant.

It was also a great opportunity for those seeking the Chuckatuck seat on City Council to get out and ask for votes, though it had to be low-key. The Ruritans, to their credit, don’t allow political signs at the event. I got there late. I saw David Gray, but was told Joe Barlow and Mary Hill made appearances as well.

Anyway, if you’ve never been to an Oyster Roast, I encourage you to go to next year’s. But some advice: Get your tickets as early as possible. There are none available at the gate and they go fast.
