Have you noticed the stories in this newspaper of late about civic clubs — a young man follows in his father’s, grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s footsteps and joins the Suffolk Rotary Club; the Chuckatuck Rotary Club sells nearly, if not more than, 1,000 tickets to their annual oyster roast; and today the Whaleyville Ruritan Club is putting together plans for a community bash. And these are only the tip of the iceberg.

There are civic clubs for all ages and for both men and women — and some are even co-ed.

Civic clubs are more than social groups. They don’t just gather to eat a meal, or sometimes have a drink. These men and women work hard to raise money that stays right here in Suffolk, helping those less fortunate.

They even provide thousands of dollars annually for high school grads who want to go on to college but don’t have the money.

Unfortunately times have changed, and some clubs are losing membership. They don’t have the infusion of young blood like they did not too many years ago.

These clubs and this community need your help. Won’t you please consider joining a club and giving back to Suffolk?
