Sophomore third baseman/pitcher Robert Hedrick (Lakeland) was named the Pennsylvania Scholastic Athletic Conference’s Player of the Week after California University of Pa. clinched the West Division title with a four-game sweep over Slippery Rock this past weekend.

In the series, Hedrick was 6-for-11 with two runs, five RBI and two sacrifice flies.

The sacrifice flies scored the game-winning runs for both Vulcan wins on Saturday.

Out of the bullpen, Hedrick got a win and a save in 2.2 innings.

For the season, Hedrick is hitting .416 with four homers, 41 RBI and 28 SB.

The stolen base total is a new single-season school record.

Pitching, Hedrick has totaled a 3-3 record, four saves and a 3.38 ERA.

Hedrick was already named PSAC Player of the Week on one other occasion this season, during the week of March 27 – April 3

In the just-finished regular season, California (33-16, 17-3) set new school records for overall wins and conference wins.

Young Highlanders climb Rock Hill for pair of upsets

Lowly Radford took back-to-back wins during a three-game series against nationally-ranked

(no,. 21) Winthrop April 21-23 in Rock Hill, S.C.

Radford lost Friday’s game 15-1 before bouncing back for upsets Saturday (5-2) and Sunday (8-6).

The two victories, as well as coming versus a ranked team, were the first back-to-back wins this season for the Highlanders, as well as their first series victory.

In the Sunday game, only one Radford player who saw action was a senior.

Freshman Jeff Cooper (Nansemond-Suffolk) was 7-for-13 batting in the series and was on base 9-of-15 times.

In Saturday’s game, Cooper knocked in two RBI and on Sunday, the Highlander DH was 3-for-4 with an intentional walk that came during Radford’s 3-run ninth-inning comeback.

Cooper is hitting an even .400 in his first year at Radford and has an on-base percentage of .488.

This coming weekend, Radford (7-34, 4-14) plays at University of Richmond Saturday at 4 p.m. and at Longwood Sunday at 4 p.m.

HSC ends regular season

with big

offensive showing

Saturday, in the last game of their regular season, Hampden-Sydney’s lacrosse team routed Virginia Wesleyan, 23-6, at Hampden-Sydney.

Freshman Willis Taylor (Nansemond-Suffolk) had two assists and was credited with seven ground balls in the Tiger victory.

For the season, Taylor played in all 12 contests for HSC, totaling four goals and six assists.

HSC (8-4, 4-2) played Lynchburg College Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals of the ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) Tournament.
