Just when I thought that I had learned all I could learn about the entertainment that is being offered at the Main Street Jazz Restaurant, I attended another exciting event Sunday before last called Sassy Sunday.

Sassy Sunday was started by two women who are good friends with a very big idea — Carolyn Fleetwood and Sandra Harris. Fleetwood is a supervisor with the Suffolk City Transit Company and Harris is a bank teller at First Federal Bank. Since both meet the public on a daily basis, they admitted that they have heard many people, especially women, in Suffolk and surrounding areas admit that they wished that they had something else to do on Sundays after five in an elegant and nice place and not have to go far to do it.

Harris and Fleetwood came together, discussed this concern, and met with Horace Balmer, one of the proprietors at the restaurant and came up with the idea to sponsor Sassy Sunday.

In the meantime, my sister Shirley Lee and I have now attended three Gospel Brunches and accompanied Johnnie Ray and Barbara Artis there a couple of Sundays ago to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary. At that time, I saw Fleetwood, who is also a very good friend of mine, and she fed me plenty of information about Sassy Sunday.

Proper dress is required and the event is founded for women, but men can attend. She and Harris didn’t want to use common names like Ladies Night or Ladies Night Out, but thought that the name Sassy Sunday was one that would make women wonder what the event was all about.

This event could be attended for many reasons, such as: if a woman wanted to meet another friend away from home from children and husband for an evening of entertainment; if a club or organization wanted to meet for an evening of fellowship and entertainment; or if a wife or a girlfriend wanted to treat her special significant other to an evening of entertainment listening to a live band with the opportunity to swing and sway on a nice dance floor. When the band takes a break, you don’t have to, because the excellent sound system that the club has plays popular songs during that time. A professional photographer is always present to take your photo in your dress-to-impress attire.

But the best thing about Sassy Sunday is that there is no cover charge at the door. However, if you get hungry or thirsty, you can order from the menu and select a beverage of your choice. Fleetwood and Harris want to make the phrase “Meet you at Main Street” a common one on a woman’s lips on Sunday.

The Gospel Brunch is held from 2- 5 p.m. and Sassy Sunday is held from 5:30-10:30 p.m.

On Fleetwood’s encouragement two weeks ago, I attended Sassy Sunday and spent the day on Main Street arriving at 2:45 p.m. for the Gospel Brunch and leaving after Sassy Sunday. I was very impressed at what I witnessed and am convinced that this restaurant is a welcomed place of entertainment in this city.

“It’s a good time to be in Suffolk,” is a true reality indeed.
