Mr. Algenon Rico Purdie, of 226 Mineral Spring Road, (Whaleyville ), went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006 at Sentara Obici Hospital. A former employee of Newport News Shipyard, and also a retiree from the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard, he is survived by his father, William Henry Purdie, and his mother Mae Hunter Joyner. Algenon is also survived by his children Algenon Rico Purdie Jr. and Crystal Purdie both of Portsmouth, and Tasha Mills and Arthur Wellons both of Suffolk. He will be missed by his brothers Tilden F. Purdie (Carol) of Hampton, and Kevin “Rondale” Purdie (Wilinda) of Suffolk, as well as his three grandchildren.

A Funeral of Triumph will be held on Monday, Aug. 7, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Mineral Spring Baptist Church, Whaleyville. The Rev. George Speight will be officiating. Visitation will begin on Saturday, Aug. 5, beginning at 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday beginning at 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home, 685 Carolina Road, Suffolk. The body will be placed in church at 9:45 a.m. on Monday. Interment will be immediately following the service at Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery.
