NSA volleyball off to strong start

Saturday in the Nansemond-Suffolk preseason tip-off event, with the Lady Saints, Portsmouth Christian and Steward School playing round robin matches, NSA didn’t drop a game.

The Lady Saints beat Portsmouth Christian, 25-12, 25-15, 25-17; and had an even quicker time of it versus Steward, 25-12, 25-10, 25-8.

Minka Foster had 10 kills versus PC and 11 kills in the Steward match.

Kristin Nuckles had 29 assists versus PC and 12 aces versus Steward.

Last night and Wednesday night, the Lady Saints are playing in the Tidewater Preseason Classic at Hampton Roads Academy.

Warrior named to all-tournament team

The Nansemond River boys’ volleyball team got their season started on Saturday in Norfolk at the Granby Invitational Tournament.

The Warriors went 2-1 in group play with wins over Norview and Norfolk Collegiate and a loss against Maury; the Commodores went on to win the championship game over Indian River.

In the third place game, the Warriors lost to the host Comets.

River’s Mark Brown was one of seven players selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Nansemond River and Indian River meet in Chesapeake on Sept. 5 and NR’s home opener comes on Sept. 7 against Lakeland.

For both evenings, the girls match is set for 6 p.m. and the boys match follows at 7 p.m.

Lakeland, NR start with SED hockey wins

On Friday, the Southeastern District field hockey schedule got underway and all three Suffolk schools were in action.

In Chesapeake, Lakeland blanked Oscar Smith, 6-0.

Chelsey Salmon led the Lady Cavaliers with two goals and two assists.

Lindsay Cutchins scored two goals. Ashby Stancill scored one goal and had a pair of assists; and Alyssa Chirico scored one goal.

Also in Chesapeake, Nansemond River easily handled Deep Creek, 6-1.

Katelyn Yandle led the Lady Warrior attack with a hat trick.

At home, King’s Fork lost to Western Branch, 3-0.

All three teams return to district play Wednesday.

Fork and River square off at NR at 3:30 p.m. and Lakeland hosts Great Bridge at 5 p.m.
