A panel of judges has deemed that Holland had the biggest and best National Night Out event in the city this year.

More than 400 residents attended Holland’s NNO activities, which included an outdoor movie, in the southwestern Suffolk village, said Lt. Debbie George, public information officer for the Suffolk Police Department.

“Holland did an exceptional job,” she said.

“But it was very close. They are going to have to work hard to keep that award next year.”

Holland and other winning neighborhoods were recognized during an appreciation ceremony Aug. 22. The police department and city’s NNO committee sponsored the event to recognize citizens, communities and business partners who participated in the Aug. 1 crime-prevention evening.

The Kingsboro/Olde Town received second place for the Best NNO Neighborhood; third place went to Pughsville. Firehouse Subs was recognized as the year’s best NNO business.

The panel of judges, which included a senior citizen and a teenager, toured all the NNO events, George said. They looked at a number of factors, including the advance planning, advance publicity, and participation in both the planning and attendance of the events.

All of the communities that participated worked hard, George added. Despite triple-digit temperatures, representatives from some neighborhoods were out all day setting up for their event.

“Suffolk’s National Night Out has grown larger each year, as has the neighborhood’s willingness to get involved and work very hard.”
