Deep Creek swept hosts Lakeland Tuesday evening in both girls and boys volleyball.

The Lady Hornets took their match, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18; and the Hornets won the boys’ match, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19.

In game one of the girls’ match, Lakeland built a 17-12 lead but could not hold on as DC outscored the Lady Cavs 13-6 from that point on.

Lakeland got out to a 6-4 lead as back-to-back aces by Amy Barnes, a crosscourt kill by Amarina Betkowski and another ace by Stephanie Norfleet won four of five points for Lakeland.

The Lady Cavs got another run going, turning a 10-8 DC into a 13-10 Lakeland lead, a pair of Erin Mack aces made it 13-10 and Lakeland kept going to a 17-12 lead before DC turned the game around.

DC kept their momentum going into game two, getting out to a 15-6 lead.

Lakeland rallied though, closing to within 19-16 on Barnes’ fourth ace of the match and then to within three points again, 20-17, after the teams traded errors.

Back-to-back Lakeland errors made it 22-17 DC and three points was as close as the Lady Cavs would get.

The Lady Hornets swarmed in front again, this time 12-1, to start game three.

Lakeland again made a come back try.

Kills by Brandi Jackson and Ciara Walden, and blocks from Walden and Ashley Johnson, helped close the gap to 15-9 DC.

Lakeland closed to within 20-16 and 21-17, but DC held on from there to take the match.

Kelsey Greene led Lakeland with six assists; Norfleet had four kills and four assists.

Johnson and Walden had three blocks apiece.

In the late match, the Lakeland boys also hung in every game, only for Deep Creek to win points when the pressure was on.

Lakeland’s digging and defensive hustle made each game close.

Lakeland had an early lead in game one, and was ahead 14-13 after back-to-back kills by Nolan Robertson.

DC won seven of the next nine points to take control of the game.

Cory Worley had seven assists in game one, on the way to 17 for the match.

The Hornets led game two, 18-8, before Lakeland made a contest of it.

Down 21-13, Chad Cross got a solo block for Lakeland and then Lakeland’s defense returned, forcing DC into long points and three straight errors, making it 21-17.

Continuing to get closer, Dominique Morgan came up with a block, then some emotion and a fist pump, making it 23-21 DC.

The Hornets got a kill on the next point though, and then a Lakeland error on game point, to go up 2-0.

DC built a 16-9 lead in game three before Lakeland rolled off five straight points to get back into the game.

Two kills by Dirrell Foreman sparked the rally.

With the score 19-18 DC, the Hornets again came through late in a game, winning six out of seven points to finish the match.

Morgan had seven kills for the Cavaliers; Foreman and Robertson had five kills each.

Lakeland hosts King’s Fork tonight, with the girls match beginning at 6 p.m.
