With a pair of goals in each half, Walsingham Academy defeated home-standing Nansemond-Suffolk, 4-0, in a non-TCIS field hockey match Tuesday.

Both teams started the game with an even amount of possession and a couple times in the first few minutes, NSA carried the attack into the Walsingham arc.

The Trojans got on the board 6:38 into the match however as a Trojan attacker made a long run with the ball from midfield into the NSA arc and then sent a low, hard shot past NSA goalie Lauren DiRenzo and into the cage.

NSA fended off more Walsingham scoring chances following the goal, and then, with 14 minutes left, NSA nearly tied it when April Garlow got free on a breakaway down the left wing.

She controlled the ball into the arc and fired a hard shot that was kicked away by the Trojan keeper.

That rush was followed by an NSA penalty corner, but nothing came of it.

Walsingham doubled their lead with just over eight minutes left in the half as a shot from the top of the NSA arc made its way through a lot of traffic and into the low, left corner of the NSA goal.

In the second half, NSA came out and put their fair share of pressure on the Trojan arc.

The Saints contested more of the possession and passing in midfield and despite the effort, and NSA outshooting Walsingham, 5-2, in the first 15 minutes of the second half, NSA could not find a goal to get back in the match.

Walsingham put the match out of reach with goals coming with 10:54 remaining and 1:30 remaining.

DiRenzo finished with 11 saves for NSA.

The Saints travel to Cape Henry today for another non-conference match at 4 p.m. and then play at Deep Creek Friday at 4:30.

Lady Saints sweep volleyball rivals

WILLIAMSBURG – Going up against one of the usual TCIS frontrunners, NSA ran their record to 6-0 and did so with ease, sweeping Walsingham, 25-19, 26-24, 25-15.

Minka Foster had 10 kills and five aces for the Saints; Kristen Nuckles had 25 assists, four kills and three aces, and Michele Boucher added five kills and two blocks.

After four straight victories away from home, NSA plays at home tonight against Cape Henry at 6:30.

That match will be the second part of a doubleheader, the NSA boys team plays their season-opening match at 4 p.m. against Norfolk Christian.

Doubles makes difference for Trojans

WILLIAMSBURG – Walsingham nipped NSA in a non-TCIS girls tennis match on Tuesday, 5-4.

The schools split the six singles matches, but Walsingham took two of three doubles matches.

NSA (0-2) hosts Cape Henry today at 4 p.m.

NSA soccer takes first loss

WILLIAMSBURG – Finishing up the day of Saints versus Trojans, Walsingham handed NSA their first soccer defeat of the season, 2-1.

Matt Davies scored NSA’s lone goal, Jacob Branchaud and Shea Ahlsted had assists on Davies’ goal.

All three goals in the match came in the second half.

NSA (1-1-2) host Atlantic Shores today at 4:30 p.m.
