MERRY HILL – They’ve spent several moments this season as supporting cast.

Thursday afternoon, however, two Lawrence Academy seniors shined as they led their team to a four-set volleyball victory over Pungo Christian Academy.

&uot;Nicole (Biggs) and Dani (Davenport) went from being bench players to leading us to victory today,&uot; Lawrence coach Dr. Ed Clouse said. &uot;They did an outstanding job.&uot;

It was indeed a stellar performance from all of Lawrence’s seniors as Jenna Griffin and Ashley Swain, two regular starters for the Lady Warriors, were also excellent in their play as Lawrence took a 25-7, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-18 win over PCA.

&uot;Ashley by far is the most improved player on the team,&uot; Dr. Clouse said. &uot;She has been playing, to use a clich\u00E9, lights out.

&uot;Jenna is every coach’s dream,&uot; he added. &uot;She is an extension of my on the floor and she plays everywhere on the court.&uot;

The Lady Warriors got off to a good start in set number one when Biggs’ hit turned the serve over to Davenport, who promptly rolled off three consecutive points. The highlight of that was a block by Kate Hodges after which Lawrence led 5-2.

Just three points later, it was Biggs who again had the winning kill and she took over serving with the match at 6-5 in favor of the Warriors. Before she relinquished that serve, she had the Lawrence ahead 20-5.

During the 14-point serving stretch she got a pair of digs from Davenport, a pair of tips and a kill from Hodges and a kill from Griffin.

After PCA registered to points, Griffin took over serve and served out the set, getting four points including two aces as the Warriors won 25-7.

In the second game, Lawrence got behind 5-1 early and eventually trailed 17-7.

Dr. Clouse showed no signs of panic, however, and remained with his lineup as Lawrence rallied behind Hodges’ serve to deadlock the game at 19-all.

Hodges had two hits, including a kill and Griffin had three serving points including an ace to start the comeback.

Hodges then served nine consecutive points to give Lawrence the lead.

Debbie Stotesbury had three hits, including two kills at a pivotal stretch during the run and Swain added two kills as Lawrence took a 21-19 lead.

The Lady Raiders didn’t concede, however and got back within 24-23 before Lawrence took the last point on a defensive play.

Pungo raced to an early 4-1 lead in the third game and then went on to victory with a 25-19 win.

Lawrence, however, ended the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Hodges’ line score read like the huge day she had, despite not playing the entire match. She had two aces, 11 hits including five kills, four blocks and two digs.

Griffin had four aces, 11 hits including seven kills and a dig while Swain had five aces, 15 hits including eight kills and a dig.

Biggs had two aces on the afternoon and 10 hits including five kills with five digs while Davenport had two aces and seven hits and three digs.

Kathryn Taylor had seven hits on the afternoon with one kill, two blocks and a dig while Stotesbury had four aces, seven hits including three kills and two digs.

Kendall Street had three hits, all of them kills while Ashtyn Mizelle had six hits including three kills.

The win kept Lawrence Academy atop the TIC with a 10-1 mark while improving their overall record to 16-2.

The Warriors close out the regular season Tuesday when they travel to Albemarle School for a 4 p.m. matchup.
