HCHS secures victory

CURRITUCK – Sometimes it looks easy.

Such was the case for Hertford County High School here last night when the Bears scored 41 points despite running only 26 offensive plays.

The result for HCHS was a 41-6 win over Currituck High School that pushed the Bears to 7-1 on the season and kept them tied atop the Northeastern Coastal Conference with a spotless 3-0 mark.

The scoring started early Friday night when LaMarcus &uot;Buck&uot; Jenkins picked up a Knight fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Michael Burton added the PAT and Hertford County led 7-0 with just less than two minutes gone from the game clock.

The Bears were on the scoreboard again three minutes later when Rayshawn Mercer went three yards to cap a three-play, 36-yard drive. The conversion kick failed leaving Hertford County ahead 13-0.

Darren Everett blocked a punt on Currituck’s next possession and Dominique Gatling covered the ball in the endzone for another HCHS score. Senior quarterback Danny Dembry connected with Andre Lyles on the two-point conversion as the Bears built the lead to 21-0.

After forcing a Currituck punt, Hertford County went 64 yards on three plays capped by Dembry’s 60-yard run. Burton added the point after touchdown to push Hertford County’s lead to 28-0.

Everett blocked his second punt of the evening early in the second quarter and Lyles recovered the ball at the Currituck four-yardline.

From there, Travis Greene scored at the 10:23 mark of the second quarter. Burton added the conversion to make it 35-0.

The final score came when Lyles picked off a pass, setting up a

42-yard, eight-play drive which was capped by a Dembry three-yard run. The kick was blocked, but the Bears had an insurmountable 41-0 lead.

In all, the Bears gave up only 17 yards of total offense in the first half. They led the game 28-0 after 10 minutes despite having run just six plays on offense.

The time was cut to eight minutes in both quarters of the second half.

Currituck scored their only touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter when Jacquez Spellman completed a pass to Aaron Powell. The conversion run failed, leaving the score 41-6.

The Bears had 211 yards on just 26 offensive plays during the game. Dembry had seven carries for 100 yards to lead the team. Mercer had eight carries for 74 yards.

Currituck had 51 yards of total offense.
