CURRITUCK n Bertie High School is getting ready to improve on an already record-setting season.

The Lady Falcon tennis team will have two opportunities this week to continue their successful 2006 campaign as they prepare for the regional playoffs in Currituck today (Tuesday) and the Northeastern Coastal Conference tournament in Edenton Wednesday.

Though both events are focused primarily on individual achievements, the Lady Falcons are not looking at the competitions in that way.

“These are individual competitions, but ours is still a team focus,” sixth-year coach Jackie Copeland said. “Everyone had worked hard to get these individuals in position to compete.”

Tuesday’s lineup will see Holly Cowand and Megan Cowan team up as the Bertie top seeded doubles team while Carla Cooper and Caroline Hoggard will go as the number two squad.

In singles’ action, senior Jessica Jones will lead Bertie’s efforts while Brittany Hoggard will be the number two seed.

“We are excited and eager to win regionals so we can go to the next step, which is the regional tournament,” Copeland said. “I think the girls are focused and ready.”

After Tuesday’s competition, the Lady Falcons will head to Edenton for the Northeastern Coastal Conference tournament.

In that event, Cowan and Cowand will again comprise the number one doubles team while Jones and Cooper will be the number two group.

Brittany Hoggard will compete as the top singles’ competitor while Caroline Hoggard will be number two.

“We’re looking forward to the conference tournament, but we’re focused on regionals right now,” Copeland said. “I want my seniors to have a good time and enjoy each other, but try to win.”

After this week’s events, the Lady Falcons will host their first playoff game as champions of the 3-A division of the NCC.

That matchup will come October 17 in Windsor when they host a wild card team which has yet to be named.
