KILL DEVIL HILLS n Bertie did their part in ensuring a league championship showdown with archrival Hertford County.

The Falcons, in their last Northeastern Coastal Conference game before they meet the Bears November 3, rolled up over 300 yards of offense in the first half and knocked off First Flight High School 46-14.

In the process, the Falcons rolled up 508 yards of total offense, over 200 of which came from Kevin Swain. The junior running back had 244 yards on 15 carries to lead the Falcons to victory.

The victory helped the Falcons improve to 5-0 in the conference and 8-2 overall heading into the last game of the regular season.

The Falcons scored first last night when Swain went 69 yards for a touchdown at the 3:45 mark of the first quarter. Jairekus Creecy added the conversion to put Bertie up 8-0.

That score remained until the 8:17 mark of the second quarter when they went 88 yards in four plays. Swain had the final 75 yards of the drive and Creecy added the two-point run to make it 16-0.

Junior defensive back Omar Outlaw’s interception set up the next Bertie score. The Falcons went 61 yards on four plays capped by a one-yard run by Creecy. He added the conversion himself to make it 24-0 at the 3:27 mark of the second quarter.

In the first half, Bertie tallied 318 yards of total offense while holding the Nighthawks to 83.

In the second half, it was more of the same as Bertie scored midway through the third quarter to continue to pull away.

Brandon Brown set up the 33-yard drive when he recovered a fumble. Swain capped the drive on a four-yard run with 6:48 to play in the third quarter. The conversion failed, but Bertie led 30-0.

The Nighthawks answered on their next possession with a 62-yard drive that went 12 plays.

Riterio Lyons scored with 17 seconds to play in the third period and Danny Robertson added the conversion to get First Flight within 30-7.

It took the Falcons just 67 seconds to answer as they went 61 yards on four plays.

Quarterback Desmond Williams capped the drive with a two-yard run and Creecy added yet another conversion to give the Falcons a 38-7 advantage.

The second-team offensive unit for BHS got their turn to score in the fourth quarter when Raymond Hocker carried the ball five times for a total of 63 yards, scoring on a 14-yard run. Hocker added the conversion and Bertie led 46-7.

First Flight scored again with 4:26 to play on a 26-yard Robertson run. He added the conversion to establish the final score.

Thanks to his performance last night, Swain now has 1,649 yards on the season and 22 touchdowns.

The Falcons (8-2, 5-0) are open next week.
