Hijackers linked to militant group

TAMPA, Fla. (UPI) – Three men, including two who had been active in revolutionary activity in the San Francisco Bay area, seized a Trans World Airlines jetliner in Albuquerque early Saturday and hijacked it to Cuba.

The three men, wanted in the murder of a New Mexico policeman, brandished automatic weapons and a knife in commandeering the aircraft to Havana.

Robert L. Goodman, 23, also known as Ralph Goodman, and Michael R. Finney, 20, of Oakland, and Charles Hill, 21, of Albuquerque, are all members of the Republic of New Africa organization based in Berkeley, a group that advocates establishment of a black nation in the south. It was founded in 1968 in Detroit, Mich.

The aircraft landed in Tampa for more fuel and to allow 32 passengers to disembark. Six crewmen, including three stewardesses, were taken on to Havana.

The FAA said it learned from Havana that the crew was &uot;safe and sound&uot; shortly after the plane arrived in Cuba at 8:49 a.m. and that Cuban authorities had the hijackers in custody.

Defense does it for Yeates

So now it’s on to Radford and a shot at all the marbles by John Yeates’ undefeated Chargers. Coach Brent Vann’s boys earned the right to meet Radford for the state Group AA championship last Friday at Yeates with a 7-0 triumph over Fauquier County’s Falcons.

…The Chargers, undefeated Peanut District champions for two years running, have now won 12 in a row this season. With their one-touchdown win over Fauquier last week, Yeates proved it could meet and conquer adversity. The Chargers lost

both Ivan Fears, their No. 1 tailback, and Fears’ backup, Warwick White, with injuries in the recent Matoaca game. Neither was in uniform against Fauquier.

With both Fears and White looking on from the sidelines, Yeates No. 3 tailback, David Wilson, assumed the offensive burden.

Las Amigas gives to needy

The Suffolk chapter of Las Amigas Inc. worshipped Sunday at Metropolitan Baptist Church after which they met at the home of Mrs. Shirley Barnes and prepared a basket of food,

which was given to a needy family.

Members attending were Mrs. Brenda Holland, Mrs. Sylvia Turner, Mrs. Doretha Ricks, Mrs. Jean Copeland, Mrs. Almeta Smith, Mrs. Mary Martin, Mrs. Virginia Underwood, and Mrs. Virginia Whitfield.
