Woman accused of trying to kill her ex in court Monday

A Boykins woman, who police say tried to hire a man to kill her former boyfriend, will be in General District Court here Monday for a preliminary hearing.

Laura Beth Gray, 28, was arrested in October at her residence.

Police say she allegedly attempted to hire an undercover Suffolk police officer, providing him with instructions on killing her her ex-boyfriend, including the type of vehicle he drives, places he frequents and his picture.

The transaction was video taped, according to police.

At the time of her arrest she was charged with one count of attempted capital murder, a Class II felony. If convicted of that offense, Gray, a former volunteer firefighter in the Boykins area, could face up to 20 years and a fine of no more than $100,000.

After the initial arrest, an additional charge of criminal solicitation was added to the charges. That offense is punishable by a prison term of 5-40 years.

Gray has been incarcerated in the Western Tidewater Regional Jail since her arrest.
