It isn’t hard to imagine that during these trying economic times more families, more people are in need of canned foods typically supplied by area food banks and non-profit organizations.

Recognizing the need, as well as understanding that canned food receipts are down, the United Way of South Hampton Roads along with Lipton employees and other corporate sponsors are joining together this week to try and jump start a food drive for families in need. The canned goods collected this week will be distributed to the Salvation Army in efforts to stock their pantry. The Salvation Army’s pantry, along with many families in our community are quickly going bare with little relief in sight.

Between now and Friday, Sept. 12, individuals, businesses and organizations can drop off canned food items at both the Salvation Army, or the Suffolk News-Herald. Next Friday, Lipton employees will accept food donations at the Salvation Army only and begin sorting them into food boxes to give to families in need.

Considering the impact food can have on a hungry family, the food drive has potential to do a lot of good in our community. The pantry at the Salvation Army has fed thousands of young children and adults since its inception. It’s our responsibility to keep the pantry shelves full for those who are less fortunate.
