For the second straight Friday night, King’s Fork faced a Southeastern District foe and after a few minutes, were behind by two touchdowns.

Western Branch’s offense scored twice in its first four plays from scrimmage and the Bruin defense held the Bulldogs to six first downs on the night as Western Branch won 28-7.

The evening turned ominous for the Bulldogs right from their first possession. On the first series of downs, the Bulldogs wound up with 4th-and-six inches at the KF 42. Going for it, Laray Kindred’s pass out of the shotgun was batted down at the line by a Bruin lineman.

On the Bruins’ second play from scrimmage, from the KF 47, James Forrester took a handoff from Michael Brown. Forrester broke off left tackle and raced straight down the field for a touchdown.

KF’s ensuing possession ended with WB’s Javanti Sparrow intercepting a 3rd-and-8 pass from Kindred and the Bruins getting the ball at its own 45.

On the second play of this Bruin possession, Brown found Sparrow deep down the left sideline and Sparrow went in for a 51-yard touchdown. With 8:30 remaining in the first quarter, Western Branch led 14-0.

Similar to the game at Indian River last week, after quickly falling behind, King’s Fork’s defense rallied to keep the Bulldogs within shouting distance. KF held WB without a first down on its next two times with the ball. After a WB possession which saw Brian Johnson sack Brown for a big loss and Derek Wright stop a screen pass for a five-yard loss, KF got the ball on the WB 37 early in the second period.

On the second play of the new drive, Kindred was sacked and fumbled. The Bruins recovered on its own 44.

On the first play after the turnover, Forrester got his second carry of the night and it went for his second touchdown on a 56-yard run.

King’s Fork got on the board at the 4:00 mark before halftime. Facing 3rd-and-6 at KF 12, Kindred hit Michael Mason on a curl route. The pass was enough for the first down, but Mason slipped past Sparrow as he slipped to the turf, then broke a tackle, and was gone for an 88-yard touchdown. With Allen Kelly’s kick, WB led 21-7.

The second half was largely a trade of punts as the Bruins were content to rely on the run to milk the clock and the Bulldogs couldn’t get much going against WB’s defense.

Starting midway through the third period, the Bruins put together a 13-play, 73-yard drive which ended six seconds into the fourth quarter on Forrester’s third touchdown run of the game, this one from five yards out.

Matthew Hommel came in at quarterback for the Bulldogs for their final two possessions. Kindred finished 4-for-21 for 128 yards with a touchdown and an interception. KF’s leading rusher was Aaron Harris with 27 yards on three carries.

The Bulldogs (1-2, 0-2) face city rival Nansemond River at Nansemond River next Friday night at 7 p.m.
