HAMPTON — Rusty Wood started from the pole position and led all the way to post his third victory of the season in the Hampton Roads Toyota Dealers 50 for the B&C Seafood Modifieds, the featured event of Saturday evening’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program at Langley Speedway.

By lap 5, Wood had already forged a four-length lead over Joe Scarbrough. Scarbrough, the division’s points leader started on the inside of row 2. Five more car-lengths separated Scarbrough from third-place Buster Horne, Jr. Continuing to pour it on, Wood stretched his margin to half a straightaway as lap 10 went on the board.

The race’s only caution flag flew on lap 45 when Jimmy Kibler spun at the start/finish line. Setting the running order, Wood was out front, followed by Scarbrough, Horne, Chris Johnson and Cameron Patrick.

Beginning lap 48, Wood had extended his lead to four lengths. That advantage grew even larger when Scarbrough suddenly fell off the pace and began to drop through the field.

At the finish, Wood was the winner by 1.056 seconds — about five lengths — over Johnson. Horne was third, while Patrick and Bubba Farmer completed the top five.

In the series standings, Scarbrough saw his lead trimmed from 38 to 24 points, 546-522, over Wood. Johnson is third, only two points behind Wood. One points race remains in the Modifieds season.

In the evening’s other feature events:

A post-qualifying shakeup landed Randy Sample on the pole for the start of the 50-lap Bass Pro Shops Super Street feature and it was all the advantage he would need as he rolled to his third win of the year.

Ritchie German was quickest in time trials. He was one of eight drivers who ran into trouble during post-qualifying inspection, though. All eight were deployed to the back of the 18-car field. The field then needed three attempts at a start before getting a clean one.

At the checkers, Randy Sample was the winner by 0.782-second — three lengths — over Ritchie German. In the division standings, Nester has nosed ahead of Jessica Wood by two points for the top spot, 522-520.

Robbie Davis picked up the lead on the 26th circuit and drove on to his third victory of the year in a 40-lapper for the Med Express Urgent Care Super Trucks.

On lap 17, the two leaders, Hugo Belfiore and Tommy Nixon, stacked up for a moment at the flagstand and spun. As a result of the incident, Paul Hogge assumed the lead. As the race resumed, Hogge paced one circuit before surrendering the top spot to Rick Potter. On lap 26, Davis wrested the lead from Potter on the backstretch.

Over the final circuits, Davis was able to hold Charlie Barclay at bay and won by a single truck-length. Barclay had been a lap down earlier in the race.

Barclay saw his night end on a sour note when officials uncovered unapproved frame alterations on his machine during the post-race inspection. Barclay was disqualified from the event.

In the amended finishing order, Davis was the winner, followed by Nixon, Hogge, Potter and Lloyd Holbrook.

In the series standings, Davis now holds a 14-point lead over Nixon, 452-438. Two races remain on the Super Truck calendar — Sept. 20 and Oct. 4.

Casey Wyatt took the lead on lap 15 and held on for his first victory of the season in a 25-lapper for the Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends.

On lap 15, leaders Brad Hancock and Steve Keesee scuffled briefly at the entrance to Turn 1. Wyatt, in third, pounced on the opportunity and passed both cars to take over the lead.

At the finish, Wyatt was the winner by 0.216-second — a single car-length — over Rette Causey. In the standings, Don McLaughlin holds a fairly comfortable 22-point lead over Hancock, 526-504. The division will complete its season on Oct. 4.

Piloting a borrowed car, Renno Marchetti IV gained the lead on lap 22 and motored to his second victory of the year in the 25-lap EZ Auto of Newport News UCAR race.

Marchetti experienced engine problems during practice. Veteran driver Randy Prillaman came to his rescue, though, putting the points leader in his No. 26 machine. Marchetti qualified eighth, while Prillaman started 21st in Marchetti’s backup car.

At the checkers, Marchetti was the winner by 0.284-second over Chris Hildebrand. Dusty Connor was third, while Robbie Salas and Ben Zoellner completed the top five.

The UCARs will wrap up their ‘08 points campaign on Sept. 27. Marchetti will carry a 22-point lead over Matt Hockaday, 588-566, into that event.

Putting an exclamation point on his championship season, Casey Sipe led all the way from the pole for his fifth win of the year in the 30-lap Standard Welding Pro 6 feature, the division’s final points event.

At the finish, Sipe was the winner by nearly a full straightaway over D.J. Watson. Warren Smigo was third, followed by David Phelps and Justin Brashears.

In the final standings (pending official verification), Casey Sipe claimed the championship by 58 points over J.B. Sipe. Smigo was third, while Wesley Harris and Watson were fourth and fifth, respectively.
