Lakeland High defeated visiting Nansemond River, 3-1, Wednesday in a Southeastern District field hockey game. The Cavaliers improved to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in district play while the Warriors dropped to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in district play.

Lakeland’s Taylor Young opened the scoring in the fifth minute off a Kelsey Smither assist. Young scored again three minutes later for a 2-0 lead, this time off a Kristin Buck pass.

Nansemond River’s Kayla Johnson scored 11 minutes after halftime to pull her team within 2-1. Breanne Lowe was credited with the assist.

Kendell Combs converted a penalty stroke, the Cavaliers’ second of the day, with six minutes remaining to close the scoring.

The Warriors had outscored their previous opposition by a combined 18-2 but Wednesday’s game was played predominantly on their side of the field. Goalkeeper Stephanie Tarafas was a standout for Nansemond River, which next plays Monday when it visits Grafton in a non-district game.

Lakeland’s next action is also outside the district. The Cavaliers take part in the SunDevil Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Salem in Virginia Beach. This tournament was set for two weeks ago at the U.S. National Training Center, but Tropical Storm Hanna postponed it.
