Residents and visitors driving on Suffolk roads will have to watch their speed, as the posted speed limit has been lowered on five roads throughout the city.

The city’s Public Works Traffic Engineering department recently conducted speed studies on the roads, and found the speeds should be lowered. The areas evaluated were chosen based on concerns presented by citizens to staff and city council members, said Debbie George, spokeswoman for the city.

Each study included an evaluation of roadway characteristics, pace speed, roadside development and environment, parking practices, pedestrian activity, and reported crash experiences, George said. New signs will go up at the following locations by the end of this week. The new speed limit does not go into effect until the signs are posted.

Ferry Road (Knotts Neck Road to the end of the roadway) – 55 mph to 40 mph

Pughsville Road (Shoulders Hill Road to Chesapeake city line) – 45 mph to 40 mph

Bennetts Pasture Road (Nansemond Parkway to Bridge Road) – 45/50/55 mph to 45 mph

Godwin Boulevard (Hillpoint Boulevard to Kings Fork Road) – 55 mph to 45 mph

Kenyon Road (Holland Road to Indian Trail) – 55 mph to 45 mph.
