Former Cavalier blanking opponents

James Madison’s Kelsey Cutchins (Lakeland) earned Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week honors for goalkeeping JMU to two 1-0 field hockey wins last week.

No. 9 JMU beat No. 8 Virginia in double overtime and beat Kent State. Cutchins totaled 167-plus minutes in goal and made eight saves in the two matches combined.

According to a press release from JMU, her shutout against Virginia included, “a clutch save on a well-struck open shot by the Cavaliers with four minutes remaining in the second overtime period to preserve the tie as JMU pulled it out three minutes later.”

Cutchins is averaging 0.59 goals against per match, which is first in the CAA and third in the nation. JMU is 4-1 overall.

Former Saint helps W&M set golf record

William and Mary’s women’s golf team won the Nittany Lion Invitational last weekend, beating second-place Penn St. by 12 shots in the three-round event.

Sophomore Katie Murphy (Nansemond-Suffolk) shot a career-low round, an even-par 72, in the final round to finish ninth individually (227, +11).

W&M’s team total for the tournament (+45) broke the school record for best team score in a 54-hole event. It broke the old record by 13 strokes.

More college notes

East Carolina improved to 3-0 on the gridiron with a 28-24 win at Tulane on Saturday. Redshirted freshman Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) had two catches for 36 yards and one punt return for nine yards for the Pirates. ECU faces N.C. State on Saturday.

Freshman cornerback Mark Jackson (Nansemond River) recorded four tackles for Randolph-Macon as the Yellow Jackets lost 39-31 in triple overtime to visiting Johns Hopkins. RMC (0-2) travels to face SUNY-Maritime this Saturday.

Christopher Newport’s Katelyn Yandle (Nansemond River) is leading the Lady Captain field hockey team in goals (4) and shots on goal (10) through CNU’s first six matches. CNU, at 3-3-0 overall, is ranked No. 19 in the nation in NCAA Division III.

After an 0-4 start to the season, Radford’s field hockey team has won back-to-back matches. Both were 3-0 results during a road trip to Pennsylvania in matches versus Robert Morris and St. Francis. Freshman back Lynsey Daughtrey (Lakeland) has started all six matches so far for Radford.

Junior April Hines (Nansemond River) led Randolph-Macon with 13 kills on Wednesday night as RMC started its conference schedule with a sweep over Randolph College, 25-22, 25-15, 25-23. RMC is 9-5 overall. Hines leads the team in kills (7.6 per match) and is averaging 2.4 blocks per match.
