NFL Week 3 – Who will be 0-3?

Published 9:18 pm Saturday, September 20, 2008

Kansas City (0-2) at Atlanta (1-1) – 1 p.m.

The Chiefs start Tyler Thigpen at quarterback today. Thigpen was a seventh-round draft pick in ’07 out of Coastal Carolina. Given how Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard have done in the job, might as well.

My pick – K.C. 17-13

Oakland (1-1) at Buffalo (2-0) – 1 p.m.

The Bills haven’t started a season 3-0 since 1992. Is this Lane Kiffin’s last game coaching for Al Davis?

Line – Bills by 9.5

My pick – Bills 40-7

Cincinnati (0-2) at N.Y. Giants (2-0) – 1 p.m.

So far the Bengals have spent more time figuring out Chad Ocho Cinco’s jersey than scoring points.

Line – Giants by 13

My pick – Giants 24-9

Miami (0-2) at New England (2-0) – 1 p.m.

Bill Belichick has experience guiding a new quarterback through games with good management and good defense. How did Tom Brady get his start?

Line – Patriots by 12.5

My pick – N.E. 30-7

Houston (0-1) at Tennessee (2-0) – 1 p.m.

Houston had an unplanned bye week last week as Reliant Stadium was damaged by Ike. A number of the Texan players, including Mario Williams, had their homes destroyed in the hurricane. Reliant Stadium might not be ready by Houston’s next home game on Oct. 5.

Line – Titans by 4.5

My pick – Titans 19-12

Tampa Bay (1-1) at Chicago (1-1) – 1 p.m.

The Bears have looked surprisingly good, even in last week’s 20-17 loss at Carolina. Matt Forte, a rookie running back from Tulane, has rushed for 215 yards.

Line – Bears by 3

My pick – Bears 27-21

Arizona (2-0) at Washington (1-1) – 1 p.m.

The Redskins are good. In any other NFC division, they’d be an easy pick for the playoffs. In the NFC East, “good” could still get you fourth place.

Line – Redskins by 3

My pick – Redskins 35-21

Carolina (2-0) at Minnesota (0-2) – 1 p.m.

The Vikings, Browns, Chargers and Jaguars top the list of possible playoff teams which already face must-win games.

Line – Vikings by 3.5

My pick – Panthers 17-7

New Orleans (1-1) at Denver (2-0) – 4 p.m.

The other side of the coin is Denver. Whether by lucky break or not, the Broncos were in position to win as Jay Cutler threw for 350 yards and Denver’s averaging the most yards per game in the NFL.

Line – Denver by 5.5

My pick – Saints 28-24

Detroit (0-2) at San Francisco (1-1) – 4 p.m.

San Francisco is 10-1 against the Lions since 1988. I’m sure some of you at least have Frank Gore on your fantasy team.

Line – 49ers by 4

My pick – S.F. 27-14

St. Louis (0-2) at Seattle (0-2) – 4 p.m.

Seattle has lost six wide receivers to injury this August and September, even including quarterback-turned-receiver Seneca Wallace who injured his calf in warm-ups last week. Fortunately, at least for one week, Seattle gets the Rams.

Line – Seattle by 9.5

My pick – Seattle 31-16

Pittsburgh (2-0) at Philadelphia (1-1) – 4 p.m.

Even in the repeated trips to the NFC championship game, the Eagle offense hasn’t looked this good in Donovan McNabb’s career.

Line – Eagles by 3.5

My pick – Eagles 28-10

Cleveland (0-2) at Baltimore (1-0) – 4 p.m.

Another embarrassing part of Cincinnati’s season so far was Joe Flacco’s 40-yard touchdown run last week. Cleveland beat the Ravens twice last year. If the Browns go to 0-3, the Brady Quinn idea will resurface.

Line – Ravens by 2.5

My pick – Browns 20-17

Jacksonville (0-2) at Indianapolis (1-1) – 4 p.m.

All-everything safety Bob Sanders is out for at least four weeks for the Colts. Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor haven’t got going yet for Jacksonville this year. They need to today.

Line – Colts by 5

My pick – Colts 24-17

Dallas (2-0) at Green Bay (2-0) – 8:15 p.m.

Green Bay’s looking smart two games into the Aaron Rodgers “era” and even if Rodgers falls off a bit from Pro Bowl-level passing, the Packers are solid favorites in the NFC North now. Which Dallas defense comes out tonight? The one that tore Cleveland apart, or the one McNabb picked apart?

Line – Cowboys by 3

My pick – Packers 31-24

N.Y. Jets (1-1) at San Diego (0-2) – 8:30 p.m., Monday

Since 1990, only three 0-3 teams have rebounded to make the playoffs. Having Shawne Merriman out for the year and LaDainian Tomlinson at half-speed is all it takes to bring a team to the pack in the NFL.

Line – Chargers by 9

My pick – San Diego 23-21

Last week – 11-4

For the season – 19-12
