Suffolk Police Officer Percy Jeffries was found dead of a gunshot wound at his Virginia Beach home on Sunday.

“There is a death investigation,” said Virginia Beach Master Police Officer Adam Bernstein, who refused further comment. “But it does not appear to be a suspicious death.”

Debbie George, city spokeswoman, confirmed Jeffries’ death but declined to comment further at this time.

Jeffries, 47, had been working in the division’s Bridge Road precinct. He joined the force in April 2002.

In March, he received a special commendation during the department’s annual awards dinner for his work in “adopting” an elderly lady he met on a police call.

After learning she didn’t have any family locally, Jeffries and his family members began spending spare time visiting and helping the woman in her Berkshire Meadows home.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
