King’s Fork (2-2, 1-2) at Deep Creek (0-4, 0-3) – 7 p.m.

Last year – King’s Fork 27-17

Deep Creek and Hickory have been crushed by Grassfield’s opening. It wasn’t long ago the Hornets were a perennial pick for the postseason. Last week, Western Branch led Deep Creek 48-0 by halftime in a 55-6 win.

The Bulldog defense directly supplied 18 points in KF’s 46-0 win over Nansemond River last week. Derek Wright returned two interceptions for touchdowns as part of 35 points in the second half. KF’s offense showed more “spread” to it as well, as receiver Mike Mason caught three passes for 54 yards and ran a reverse for a 60-yard touchdown.

Lakeland (1-3, 1-2) at Western Branch (4-0, 3-0) – 7 p.m.

Last year – Western Branch 41-6

Lakeland, and quarterback Neil McKoy, hit a couple more big plays last week, but fell just short to Grassfield. McKoy has totaled 489 passing yards and five passing TDs for the Cavs.

The Cavaliers face a tall order on both sides of the ball against the Bruins who are averaging 36.3 points per game while holding opponents to 6.8 points per game.

Nansemond River (1-3, 0-3) at Indian River (2-2, 2-1) – 7 p.m.

Last year – Indian River 17-7

Nansemond River made it tough on the Braves, especially IR’s offense, last year at NR. The challenge seems even larger this time around though. Indian River’s 2-2 record looks average until seeing that the losses have come to Oscar Smith and Lake Taylor.

The Braves’ offense is more dynamic than last year’s playoff team. QB Frankie Hamrock is averaging 178 yards per game; he threw for 229 yards and four TDs in IR’s 34-14 win versus Hickory last week. IR’s former quarterback, Dravon Poittilo, caught a TD, ran for a TD and ran for 110 yards against Hickory.

Atlantic Shores (3-2) at Nansemond-Suffolk (2-2, 2-0) – 7 p.m.

Last year – NSA 18-12, OT

This will be the third straight week the Saints face a team coming in off a lopsided victory. Atlantic Shores beat Hargrave Military 43-18 last Friday. Josh Healey rushed for 215 yards and Parker Jackson rushed for 154 yards. In the last two weeks, NSA’s beat Norfolk Christian and Bishop Sullivan by a combined score of 71-7.

NSA’s defense has been physical and aggressive in its last two games. Will Crenshaw has rushed for four TDs while Isaac Ballou has a kick return and a punt return for touchdowns in the last two weeks.

In the first Virginia Independent School power rankings of the season, the Seahawks are No. 1 in Division 2 and the Saints are No. 3.
