Edith Goldberg McDonald, 65, of north Wilmington, Del., died on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Kutz Home after her courageous 28-year battle against a malignant brain tumor.
Edie, born and raised in Suffolk, was the daughter of the late Meyer R. and Miriam P. Goldberg. She was educated in the Suffolk Public Schools and graduated from Mary Washington College in 1965, where she was a member of the Mortarboard National Honor Society. After teaching for several years in Newport News, Edie went to work for the Office of Economic Opportunity in Washington, D.C. In 1972, she transferred to the Philadelphia office of the Job Corps program and later rose to be the regional administrator of Job Corps. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1991. In 1977, Gov. Pete du Pont appointed Edie to the Delaware Women’s Commission.
Edie is survived by her husband of 37 years, John H. McDonald, and their son, Stephen G. McDonald of north Wilmington; sisters, Beth Lansky and husband, Alvin, of Germantown, Tenn., and Bayla Manis and husband, Arnold, of Memphis, Tenn.; and brothers Aubrey Goldberg and his wife, Joanne, of Las Vegas, and Donald Goldberg, and his wife, Kay, of Suffolk, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment was at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery outside of Wilmington on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Memorial donations may be made to the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 W. Finney Avenue, Suffolk, Va. 23434
