JMU clinches top seed

With victories over the weekend, first in Williamsburg, then in Norfolk, James Madison improved to a 15-2 overall record and 7-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association to clinch the top seed in the CAA Field Hockey Tournament.
On Saturday at Old Dominion, James Madison won 3-0. Junior Kelsey Cutchins (Lakeland) made two saves for the Lady Dukes for her seventh shutout of the season. JMU outshot ODU 19-3. All three shots by ODU came from senior Katelyn Smither (Lakeland).
On Sunday, ODU (7-11, 5-2) rebounded with a 4-0 win against visiting Virginia Commonwealth. Smither scored two goals. The match was scoreless until Smither scored 10 minutes into the second half. Smither has a team-high seven goals on the season. ODU hosts North Carolina and William and Mary this coming weekend to close its regular season.
James Madison, currently No. 5 in the nation, defeated William and Mary 3-1 on Sunday. JMU can complete an undefeated conference record on Friday against Northeastern. JMU will be trying for its first undefeated conference season since 1995.
