A Suffolk man accused of exchanging sexually explicit e-mails with an undercover investigator in Louisiana is being held without bond in Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

Christopher Keith Hicks, 33, of 1293 Barnes Road, was taken into custody Friday at the Franklin Public Library, said Lt. Tim Whitt, of the Franklin Police Department. Police say Hicks was using one of the library’s public computers to access an online chat-room when he was arrested.

Louisiana authorities had notified Virginia Beach police that they were investigating sexually explicit messages being sent from the Franklin computer, Whitt said in a news release issued late Monday.

Last Friday, Louisiana officials called local agencies – including the Suffolk and Franklin police departments – to report that the suspect was communicating with their investigator.

Hicks is charged with reproducing, selling, distributing or electronically transmitting child pornography and using a communications system to solicit a person over the Internet, with reason to believe the person in a juvenile, according to Whitt.

Additional charges may be pending, Whitt said.

Suffolk police also are investigating Hicks, said Debbie George, spokeswoman for the city. No charges have been filed in Suffolk, however.
