JMU’s Cutchins is All-American again

Adding to all-conference and all-region honors for the just-completed college field hockey season, James Madison junior goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins (Lakeland) was voted first team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and womensfieldhockey.com for the 2008 season. Cutchins was a first team All-American by both organizations in 2007.

Cutchins led the nation (NCAA Div. 1) in save percentage (.824) and goals against average per match (0.72). Cutchins had eight solo shutouts for JMU, which finished 18-3 overall, No. 4 in the nation according to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and with the regular-season and tournament championships in the Colonial Athletic Association. With her senior season to go, Cutchins is JMU’s current record holder for goals against average for a career (0.96).

East Carolina clinched the East Division title in Conference-USA and a spot in the C-USA Championship Game in two weeks with a 17-13 win at Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday. The Pirates improved to 7-4 overall, 5-2 in C-USA.

Redshirted freshman Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) caught four passes for 36 yards for the Pirates. For the season, Freeney has totaled 11 receptions for 113 yards and 13 punt returns with 7.3 yards per return.

ECU hosts conference foe Texas-El Paso on Friday. The conference final is set for Dec. 6.

Christopher Newport’s run in the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament (NCAA Div. 3) ended Sunday in the national quarterfinals.

On Saturday in Newport News, CNU defeated No. 4 Emory 2-0 in the round of 16. On Sunday, No. 8 Messiah defeated CNU 2-1 in double overtime. CNU finishes the season 17-5-3.

No. 1 Mount Union defeated Randolph-Macon 56-0 in the first round of the NCAA Div. 3 football playoffs on Saturday in Alliance, Ohio. The Purple Raiders, who have won nine NCAA championships, led the Yellow Jackets 21-0 8:41 into the game and totaled 676 yards of offense.

Randolph-Macon finishes the season with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship and a 6-5 record.

Hoops wrap-up on campus

Freshman Kenny Hart (Nansemond River) was voted Rookie of the Week for men’s basketball in the USA South Conference for the second consecutive week as Averett hosted and won the Averett University Classic on Saturday and Sunday.

Averett (3-1) defeated Piedmont 72-55 on Saturday, and Apprentice 89-80 on Sunday. Apprentice (4-1) defeated Greensboro 79-77 on Saturday.

Against Piedmont, Hart was 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range with 17 points and four rebounds. Against the Builders, Hart had 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting along with six rebounds. Freshman Ruben Pierce (Nansemond River) totaled six points and nine rebounds in 22 minutes in the two games for Averett.

Hart is averaging 13.3 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game and is shooting 53.8 percent from three-point range.

For Apprentice, Eric Joe (Nansemond River) had 18 points and nine rebounds against Greensboro, then 22 points, six rebounds and four assists against Averett. Fred Spratley (Nansemond River) scored 10 points in each game.

Apprentice’s women’s basketball team won the Great Ships Classic with wins at home on Friday and Saturday. Apprentice (2-1) defeated Penn State-Allegheny 65-52, then Penn State-Fayette 80-51.

In the first round game, Shemeka Warren (Nansemond River) scored 12 points. Warren scored five points and Natarsha Whitworth (Lakeland) scored four in the final game.

Winthrop dropped to 1-3 on Friday with a 97-70 loss at No. 22 Davidson. Freshman Andre Jones (Nansemond River) scored eight points in 24 minutes off the bench for Winthrop. Davidson’s Stephen Curry had 30 points and 13 assists.

Virginia Wesleyan’s men’s basketball team went 0-2 this weekend at the LaGrange Tip-Off Tournament in LaGrange, Ga.

In the second game of the tourney, a 66-58 loss to Maryville, Quinton McDuffie (Nansemond River) led the Marlins with 16 points. McDuffie, a freshman, is starting for VWC (2-2) and has scored in double digits in three of the first four games this season.
