Former Lady Cavs named all-state

James Madison junior goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins (Lakeland) claimed state Player of the Year honors and Old Dominion senior forward Kaitlyn Smither (Lakeland) was also first-team all-state on the Virginia Sports Information Directors 2008 All-State Teams released on Friday.

Cutchins was a repeat selection as the VaSID State Player of the Year. She has also earned consecutive honors as a consensus First Team All-American, CAA Player of the Year, CAA Scholar-Athlete for Field Hockey, and ECAC Goalkeeper of the Year.

Cutchins led the nation in 2008 with a 0.72 goals against average, which also set a JMU single-season record. She also led the nation with a .824 save percentage and helped the Dukes rank first in shutouts per game (0.52).

Smither was named to the All-State First Team for the second straight season. She led ODU in scoring during 2008 with 11 goals. The two-time First Team All-Conference pick and CAA Preseason Player of the Year also had three assists to total 25 points on the year. Smither tied for third in the CAA in game-winning goals (3) in games with Boston University, Hofstra, and Virginia Commonwealth.

Defensively, Smither helped the Lady Monarchs to four shutouts against conference opponents Northeastern, Towson, Hofstra, and Virginia Commonwealth. Smither also tied for first in the CAA in defensive saves stopping five opponent shots from reaching the back of the Lady Monarch cage.
