A 20-year-old Suffolk man originally wanted in connection with the rape of a 16-year-old acquaintance, faces additional felony charges after allegedly ramming a police car and attempting to escape, according to police reports.
Robert Jeremiah Uhl of the 7100 block of Old Myrtle Road was originally wanted for rape, sodomy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor for an incident that occurred in the early morning hours Saturday, Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George said in a press release.
Police went to his home at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday to serve the arrest warrants connected to the original crime. Uhl was not at home, but a family member called him, George said Monday.
When he arrived at the residence in a small gray car, he accelerated as he drove up the driveway and came to an abrupt stop, according to a police account of the arrest. A detective approached the driver’s side window of the vehicle and told Uhl that he had warrants for his arrest, ordering him out of the vehicle.
The detective then tried to open the driver’s side door, but found it to be locked, George said. Uhl then revved the engine and put the vehicle into reverse “in a manner that caused the gears to grind,” the press release stated.
The detective jumped away from the car as it accelerated in reverse and rammed into an unmarked Suffolk Police detective’s car that was sitting in the driveway with it emergency lights activated.
Another detective who was sitting inside the car at the time was later taken to Sentara Obici Hospital, where she was treated for back and shoulder injuries and then released.
After smashing into the detective’s car, Uhl accelerated forward quickly, going down the driveway towards a residence, George said in the press release. The vehicle came to a stop, and Uhl jumped out and ran. A detective and a uniformed officer chased him down and arrested him.
Additional charges lodged as a result of the arrest incident include hit and run with personal injury, attempted malicious wounding of a police officer, resisting arrest and destruction of property.
Uhl is being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.
