If the Lakeland High boys basketball team was looking to use its annual holiday tournament to test itself, it was right on the mark by inviting the Battlefield Bobcats from Haymarket in Prince William County. The Cavaliers fell 69-57 on Monday and will play Ocean Lakes at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the tournament’s third-place game.
Lakeland’s last lead was at 13-11 and the visitors led by 22 points after three quarters before substituting liberally. The Cavaliers pulled within seven points with 35 seconds remaining in a sluggish fourth quarter that featured 42 attempted free throws.
Justin Watson posted a game-high 23 points for Lakeland while teammate David Barnes added 15 and Tony Smith chipped in 13. However, Smith went 2 for 12 from 3-point range and the Cavaliers made only 17 of 61 field goals (28 percent) during the game.
Battlefield was led by Dion Romeo, who had 14 points, and Jamar Jones, who had 11.
The Bobcats (4-2) will play Indian River, a Monday victor over Ocean Lakes, in Tuesday’s 8 p.m. title game.
