Hughie Grimes Powers Jr., 81, of 8933 River Crescent, died Feb. 6, 2009 at Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Norfolk, he retired as a manager at Prudential Insurance with almost 40 years of service. During his tenure at Prudential, he earned his CLU designation, won two Presidential citations, and was a seven-time member of the Leaders Round Table. Hughie was a charter member and deacon of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, member of the Ecumenical Prayer Breakfast for over 40 years, Ocean View Masonic Lodge No. 335 for over 60 years, the V.F.W., American Legion, past president of the Portsmouth/Chesapeake Life Underwriters Association, and an Army veteran of World War II and Korea.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Dolores Powers; three children, Barbara Messina, of Virginia Beach, Charles A. “Andy” Powers and wife, Tricia, of Suffolk, and Loretta Soule and husband, Kent, of Chesapeake; two sisters, Dolores Hickman and husband, Richard, of Virginia Beach and Judy Morris and husband, Henry, of Norfolk; and four grandchildren, Charles A. Powers II and wife Karen, Alison Selimata and husband Emre, Amanda Greer and Meredith Soule.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, 2690 Bridge Road, Suffolk, by Dr. Keith Curran and the Rev. David Harris. Entombment will in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Masonic rites will be held in the funeral home at 7 p.m. Thursday and the family will receive friends afterwards until 8:30 PM. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.
