Gertie Lee Hunter, 84, of 9137 New Road, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. She was born to the late Julia and Charlie Wiggins in Whaleyville, Va.
Gertie was a devoted member of Corinth Chapel United Church of Christ until her health began to fail.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lionell Hunter, and a son, Spugeon Jones.
Gertie leaves behind to cherish her memory and celebrate her life, her children, Marjorie (Victor) Ramocruz, Rufus (Mary Ann) Wiggins, Mary (John) Wiggins, Vertley Hunter, Bertina Copeland (Chuck), Elvin Hunter (Jackie), Melvin (Shelia) Hunter, Terry Hunter, Jerone Hunter, Lynch Hunter, M. Latina Hunter, Peggy (Frank) Cross; two devoted granddaughters, Alveta (James) Holliman, Minister C. Toni (George) Goodman; two devoted grandsons, Quinten White and X-Ze’vion Holliman; 32 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Ms. Hunter will be on view from noon to 6 p.m. and a wake service will take place 6:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 10 at the funeral home. The family will receive visitors at 6734 South Quay Road at all other times. A service of remembrance will take place 1 p.m., Saturday, April 11 at New Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ, Rev. John T. Myers, eulogist. The family will depart from Ms. Hunter’s residence, 9137 New Road, at noon Saturday for the procession to the church. Interment will immediately follow at Hunter Family Cemetery.
